Stop first: Keep cats away while testing. Unplug the unit before removing the globe or touching an exposed moving area. Stop immediately if the unit is hot, smells burnt, has a damaged cord, or makes grinding or straining sounds.

A missed automatic cycle does not always mean the motor has failed. First separate three situations: the unit never detected the cat, it detected the visit but is waiting or paused, or it tries to cycle and stops with an error.
