A feeder setting is not a nutritional unit. “One portion” can change with kibble diameter, shape, density, hopper fill, and the dispenser mechanism. Test the exact food you serve, repeat enough trials to see variation, and use grams—not cups or app labels—when diet accuracy matters.

1. Why the same setting can deliver different amounts
Automatic feeders meter pieces, volume, or turns of a mechanism—not calories. Two kibbles can occupy the same volume but have different mass and calorie density. Irregular shapes can bridge in the hopper or leave empty spaces in an auger.
Delivery may also change as the hopper empties, after food dust builds up, or when a large piece briefly blocks the outlet. That is why the test must use the real food and repeat the same setting many times.

2. Set up a repeatable test
- Use a scale that reads to at least 1 gram; finer resolution helps with very small meals.

- Fill the hopper to a normal working level with the actual kibble.
- Run two warm-up portions and return that food to the hopper.
- Select one portion setting and do not change it during the series.
3. Measure at least ten portions
Dispense into the tared bowl, record the grams, empty it, and repeat. Do not combine portions before weighing because that hides individual errors. Note a zero delivery, partial jam, or multiple release exactly as it occurred.
Calculate the mean by adding all weights and dividing by the number of trials. The range is the maximum minus the minimum. Percentage deviation from the target is: (measured − target) ÷ target × 100.

4. Test the conditions that change delivery
Repeat a shorter series when the hopper is low, after cleaning, and with any new kibble formula or size. If the feeder uses battery backup, verify a scheduled meal on backup power without disconnecting anything in a way the manual forbids.
Do not use repeated test meals as the pet’s normal feeding without accounting for the extra food. Keep pets away from the bowl during measurement.

5. Turn grams into a safe schedule
Use the food label’s calories per gram or calculate it from calories per cup and the measured grams in that cup. Then compare the resulting daily calories with the feeding plan from your veterinarian—not with a generic app recommendation.
If delivery is inconsistent, first confirm food compatibility and cleaning. Contact the manufacturer for repeated jams, zero meals, or unexplained doubles. For insulin timing, prescription diets, severe food restriction, or animals unable to tolerate a missed meal, use direct supervision or another plan approved by the veterinarian.
Do not change a prescribed calorie target or medication-linked meal schedule based only on this test. The test measures the feeder, not the pet’s nutritional needs.
